Second World War Essay Example for Free

Second World War Essay The First World War was genuinely a critical occasion ever. The strain that started in Europe advanced into a worldwide clash which went on for four long years. The war killed the two warriors and regular citizens, and brought about the huge obliteration of property. After the war finished, the nations included attempted estimates which looked to keep away from another worldwide clash. One of those measures was the drafting of a few harmony settlements, including the Versailles Treaty. This understanding rebuffed Germany and made it exclusively answerable for the event of the war. Lamentably, the bargain caused harshness from the Germans and made ready for a whole new universal war to happen. Incidentally, it was the Second World War which settled the unaddressed issues of the principal Great War. For sure, the Versailles Treaty caused the event of the Second World War, which finished the issues of the First World War. The Versailles Treaty believed Germany to be the main country at risk to the event of the First World War. It must be noticed that Germany initiated the foundation of the union framework, which ensured expanded clash in Europe (Perry, 1989). As a result of its triumph in the Franco-Prussian War, Germany obtained the territories of Alsace and Lorraine. While trying to make sure about these previous French regions and keep France from recapturing them, the Chancellor of Germany Otto von Bismarck aligned with Italy and Austria-Hungary. Germany proceeded with its animosity after Bismarck was expelled from office. When William II expected the seat, Germany requested more domain and started to expand its maritime quality. Be that as it may, Germany was by all account not the only country to fault for the First World War. Truth be told, Serbia was liable for beginning the war. It was a shooting occurrence which set off the boundless clash: a Serbian named Gavrilo Princip shot Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his significant other (Heyman, 1997). Austria looked to assault Serbia consequently, and went to Germany for help. Thus, the beginning stage of the First World War was the contention among Austria and Serbia (Perry, 1989). The finish of the First World War realized a few endeavors at the reclamation of harmony, yet it was forestalled by aims of the influenced parties. Before the finish of the First World War, U. S. President Woodrow Wilson had just drafted a program for harmony which he introduced in Congress through the â€Å"Fourteen Points† discourse (Perry, 1989). One of the significant focuses he recommended in his discourse was â€Å"peace without victory† (as refered to in Perry, 1989, p. 647). Wilson needed different nations to rehearse reasonableness towards Germany, for he felt that seriously punishing the country would just power it to retaliate for their misfortunes. He basically needed a reasonable settlement which would ensure improved remote relations between the victors and the crushed nations. Sadly, Wilson’s trusts ran against the severe sentiments which were created during the war. The European Allies endured huge misfortunes, which thus caused scorn between nations. Among all Allies, France was generally influenced by the First World War; dominant part of the fights which occurred in the western front occurred in A french area. While in excess of 3,000,000 French residents were injured, in excess of a million French officers passed on in the war. Subsequently, it was not out of the ordinary that France wanted serious discipline for Germany and tried to be made up for its harmed properties (Perry, 1989). The Versailles Treaty didn't ensure reasonable treatment towards Germany, as it forced brutal authorizes on the vanquished country. The settlement was clearly disadvantageous for Germany; it was made to diminish their capacity and domain. The settlement was gainful for France; in addition to the fact that it regained Alsace-Lorraine, yet it additionally got power over the Saar coal mineshafts (Halsall, 1944). Germany additionally lost region to Poland and Britain (Perry, 1989). What's more, the Versailles bargain fundamentally diminished the military ability of Germany. The understanding required the German armed force to be constrained to 100,000 individuals, which were all to be volunteers (Halsall, 1944). Germany was likewise approached to disarm their regions in the two sides of Rhine River. All the more significantly, the bargain requested Germany to pay different countries because of the harms which came about because of the war. Germany should pay $33 billion worth of reparations, a sum just decided two years after the country marked the settlement (Perry, 1989). When all is said in done, the Versailles Treaty censured Germany for the First World War and seriously rebuffed it thus. Therefore, the Germans were infuriated by the states of the Versailles Treaty and incited them to begin one more universal war. Germany was irritated by the requests for reparations; they felt that the sum given for them to pay surpassed the nation’s money related limit (Perry, 1989). Germans likewise couldn't help contradicting arrangement on grounds of being exclusively liable for the result of the war. They maintained the conviction that Germany must not be singled out, for all the countries associated with the war must be considered responsible for its outcomes. After the First World War, Germany turned into a piece of the League of Nations, the association which was made to create harmony and participation between nations. The nation likewise took part in other after war exercises coordinated at looking after harmony. Notwithstanding these endeavors, dominant part of the Germans were as yet not prepared for harmony. A large portion of them stayed severe towards the Versailles Treaty. The enmity was gotten from embarrassment after thrashing; all things considered, the settlement incapacitated their country, diminished their domains and expected them to pay an incredible whole (Bergen, 2002). The Weimar government endeavored to alter the bargain through quiet methods. When Adolf Hitler came into power, he totally subverted the Versailles Treaty (Perry, 1989). With Hitler as pioneer, Germany abused the Versailles Treaty and began the way to the Second World War. Hitler immediately broke the states of the arrangement; he dismissed the impediments forced on the nation. He promptly expanded the military to 550,000 men and rearmed it (Sulzberger, 1985). Hitler likewise sent soldiers in Rhineland; this activity was plainly an infringement of the disarmament in the region as requested in the settlement. In what appeared to be a reaction to the loss of terrains because of the Versailles Treaty, Hitler tried to grow A german area by joining all German-talking individuals (Sulzberger, 1985). The entirety of the previously mentioned forceful acts submitted by Hitler started another worldwide clash and in the long run brought about what everyone dreaded: the Second World War. Unexpectedly, the issues of the First World War were settled constantly World War. One of the issues of the Great War was self-assurance, the guideline wherein national gatherings pick their own political state (Perry, 1989). The purpose for Archduke Ferdinand’s death was the Serbs’ want to join every single Slavic individuals. President Wilson remembered the standard of self-assurance for his â€Å"Fourteen Points,† yet it end up being risky. Hitler even utilized the guideline to attack different nations. After the Second World War, self-assurance was did not propose anymore. Rather, the Atlantic Charter drafted by U. S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill proposed the self-government to people groups. In the mean time, the reclamation of harmony was likewise a problem after the First World War. The countries attempted to reestablish harmony through different harmony settlements, including the Versailles Treaty. Notwithstanding, the bargain exacerbated the war issue. After the Second World War, there was at that point a universal association built up to keep up harmony among nations. As opposed to make singular harmony settlements to every Axis power, the Allied nations looked for harmony as the United Nations. This move end up being increasingly powerful in reestablishing worldwide harmony and request (Perry, 1989). The First World War was a really huge encounter. The outfitted clash was caused and described by pressure, so there were numerous endeavors to evade one more war from occurring. The Versailles Treaty was a harmony settlement, however it didn't add to the rebuilding of harmony. Or maybe, it made the Second World War by inciting Germany look for vengeance over its authorizations. Luckily, with the event of the Second World War, the issues of the Great War were settled.

Books for Hippies and Celebrating Your Inner Flower Child

Books for Hippies and Celebrating Your Inner Flower Child Some of these books for your inner flower child are from the 1960sâ€"70s, and some are just about shirking convention in search of a radical, counter-cultural lifestyle. If youre interested in  hippies, folk singers, Haight-Ashbury, poetry, free love, Woodstock, living off the land, and environmentalism, this list is for you, flower child! Farm City by Novella Carpenter Novella Carpenter is the daughter of two hippies who raised her to live off the landâ€"and yet she loves cities and urban life. She loves the energy, the community, and the eclectic individuals. That’s how she finds herself in a run-down part of Oakland combining her loves of farm and city. Novella starts a full-on urban farm in an abandoned lot behind her house. It’s complete with vegetables, chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, bees, and pigs. Farm City a wonderful and unique memoir full of wild stories, and I bet it will make you want to grow some of your own food! Daisy Jones the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid I recently wrote about this one in the Riot Roundup: The Best Book We Read Aprilâ€"June 2019. I thought it was incredible! It’s the story of 1970s rock n’ roll stars on their rise to fame. The Six is a rock band led by Billy Dunne, and Daisy Jones is a magnetic singer-songwriter. A producer discovers that Daisy and Billy are a magical duo, and pushes them together with legendary results. The book is told in retrospective as an oral history interview. It’s a great reflection on celebrity and rock n’ roll, plus it’s just a wild good timeâ€"everywhere Daisy Jones The Six goes is a party! Hippie by Paulo Coelho Hippie is most obviously a book about the flower child generation. Thought to be Coelho’s most autobiographical novel, it’s about a young Brazilian man, Paulo, who wants to spend his youth living free, writing, and traveling the world. He rides trains and hitchhikes through Bolivia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. Then he heads to Amsterdam where he meets Karla, another free spirit, who convinces him to ride “The Magic Bus” (a literal bus) with her to Nepal. This is a book of free love and adventure, of long-haired hippies and travel. It’s a fun read that will totally immerse you in this world. Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell by David Yaffe This is an excellent and thorough biography of Joni Mitchell, the queen of folk and Laurel Canyon. It has all the good stories you would want from a Joni Mitchell biography, including Joni teaching herself to play guitar, and the inspiration behind various songs and lyrics. It puts a lot of attention on her famous relationships, those with the likes of Leonard Cohen, David Crosby, Graham Nash, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne, to name a few. While it largely focuses on Joni Mitchell’s life and her artistry, it’s also about the era. It covers the moment “Big Yellow Taxi” got famous, Mitchell touring with Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, and her woes about missing out on Woodstock.  It’s a loving biography that fans of Joni Mitchell and lovers of this era will adore. Arcadia by Lauren Groff Arcadia takes place in the 1960s in western New York State at a hippie commune. It’s narrated by Bit, the first child born at the commune. The hippies try to establish a utopian society and live off the land, but through Bit’s childish eyes we see the beautiful and the terrible of this world they create. This book is fantastically rendered and Groff’s prose is, as always, hypnotically beautiful. The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur Though she’s of a completely different generation, Rupi Kaur’s second poetry collection deals with a lot of the same themes as art from the 1960sâ€"70s. She reflects on feminism, love, freedom, healing, journeys, and, finally, blooming. She’s like a beloved lyricist or folk singer in that she writes poems that will speak to the heart. Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion Published in 1968, Slouching Towards Bethlehem is an immediate and visceral account of Didion’s experiences in California in the 1960s. Its a journalistic account of Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture, drugs, and sociopolitical issues. Reading it is like stepping back into history, and it’s a wonderful place to start with Didion. The Girls by Emma Cline It’s the late 1960s and Evie is a lonely angsty teenager when she spots a group of girls a few years older than she is hanging out in the park. These girls have an aura of freedom and abandon that attracts Evie instantly. Their hair is long, their dresses are unkempt, their feet are bare, and Evie is convinced they’re having a more fun and exciting life than she is. She gets drawn into the world of these mysterious girls, and it leads to Evie falling in with an infamous and violent cult. The story is straight from the headlines of the darker side of the 1960s. HOWL by Allen Ginsberg Though a bit early on the timeline, this is still a quintessential text for the hippie generation. It’s emblematic of postâ€"World War II era anxieties about societal values and calls for change that were surely coming about in the 1960s. It was published in 1956 and immediately became one of the most controversial banned books of modern American literature. It faced an obscenity trial, and brought forward conversations about free speech, protest, sexuality, and radicalismâ€"and what’s more hippie than that? salt. by Nayyirah Waheed A meditative collection of micropoems, salt.  speaks straight to the core of the soul. It deals with nature, sensitivity, humanity, and self love. It’s beautifully written, thought-provoking, and it will make you feel a million emotions. Zen Mind, Beginners Mind by Shunryu Suzuki First published in 1970,  Zen Mind, Beginners Mind is a book of transcriptions of lectures given by Shunryu Suzuki, a monk and teacher who helped to popularize Zen Buddhism in the United States. Many recommend it as a good starter book on Zen concepts and spirituality. The Lorax by Dr. Seuss Before the climate emergency hit the headlines, we had The Lorax. In this famous childrens book, Dr. Seuss warns against progress for the sake of progress, for fear it will destroy Mother Earth. Even though environmental destruction has long been an issue people are oblivious about, it did gain some attention in the 1970s with the founding of Earth Day. The Lorax followed shortly after, and I’m sorry to say it is still incredibly relevant today. Van Life: Your Home on the Road by Foster Huntington Perhaps the millennial version of hippies hitchhiking the world is the van life movement. This book is literally about a community of people who live in their vans (Volkswagens, school buses, and the like) and travel the world. Raw Material: According to the manager of Pizza Hut Peshawar, he said that they receives their raw materials on weekly basis from their warehouse (Lahore). Firstly the raw materials of Pizzas comes to Karachi through ship from Yum incorporation (Dubai) then Karachi branch is responsible for delivering raw materials to Lahore warehouse and finally they send it to Peshawar branch while for soft drinks and chickens they have a contract with fresh vegetables suppliers, Pepsi and KN respectively for delivering them fresh vegetables, soft drinks and chickens on daily basis. Weekly Stock Process: Pizza Hu t has got freezers for keeping the stock on weekly basis because their warehouses are at Lahore and Karachi so its hard for them to order raw materials on daily basis while other things like fresh vegetables, Pepsi and chickens are being ordered on daily basis because they want to utilize fresh chickens, vegetables and so on. And they are buying Masala for a week, because Masala is something which cant get ruin so thats why they buy it for a week. Cooking/Operation: According to the manager of Pizza Hut Peshawar, currently he has got 60 supporting workers who work in two shifts. First shift from 9am to 5pm and second shift from 7pm to 3am so for running pizza hut, they have divided their staff in different categories like there are some waiters who gets an order at hall and some of the waiters are responsible to take orders at take away and receptionist takes an order through telephone calls, so they gives order to operation department through Computer Network and the order passe s to Order Filler then he pass the order to Order Checker and he is passing it to the Cook. When the given ordered gets ready then Cook gives the given ordered Pizzas and etc to Order Filler and he is gives it to Waiter for serving the customer and this whole process takes only 15 minutes. Serving Customers: Pizza Hut has different types of waiters which are as follows: Take Away: They take orders from customers and passing the order to operation department through Order Filler and Order Checker respectively after that when the given order gets ready then Order Filler is responsible to deliver the item to take away, for serving those customers who wants to take Pizzas with themselves. Waiters: Pizza Huts waiters take an order and passes it to order filler for delivering Pizzas to customers Sales: There main focus is providing best quality foods within few minutes of given orders to deliver Pizzas in 15 minutes so their fast services along with best quality of Pizzas are generating customer satisfaction which leads towards high profit. Support Activities provides purchased raw materials, and human resources to support the primary activities. Manager: He is the responsible person for providing raw materials from their warehouse (Lahore) on weekly basis and soft drinks, chickens and fresh vegetables are being ordered to their contractor on daily basis and he is keep hanging under the roof of Pizza Hut all around in order to generate profits. Customer Care (Take Away, Waiters, Supplier (Free Home Delivery), Finance Manager and Guards) They are contributing at different levels for increasing the sales which are the following: Take Away: They take orders from customers and passing the order to Operation Department for serving that customer who wants to buy Pizzas on the spot due to which their sale increases. Waiters: At Pizza Hut there are some waiters which work inside the organization and they are responsible to take orders from the customers. Supplier (Free Home Delivery): They are only responsible for delivering Pizzas in order to generate revenue from those customers who gives an order of Pizzas delivery. Finance Manager: In order to keep the record of budget manager himself and a subordinate is holding the responsibility of payment procedures that they have a better financial management. Operation Department (Cooks and Bakers): They are responsible for the process of cooking best quality Pizzas. Five Performance Objectives Quality: Pizza Hut is known by their best of quality pizza in Peshawar. They are buying raw materials from Yum (Dubai), staffs are well-trained and they are using latest equipments which are helping them to serve the customers with best pizzas. Speed: Pizza Hut is delivering pizzas to their customers within 15 minutes. It shows that how much they are efficient in the process of baking pizza with the help of trained staffs and latest technologies. Dependability: As earlier we have discussed that their raw materials are coming from Lahore (warehouses) in order to provide best quality of pizzas but ordering raw materials can make them in trouble because sometimes uncertainty can occur now a days in Peshawar and around Pakistan while if we talk about customers they are more depended on them, as they get orders then they have to deliver the pizzas on time and they are really efficient in delivering pizzas because it takes only 15 minutes right after order. Flexibility: It tends to be effective with the changes of customers taste, design and so on. Pizza Huts major specialty is in Pizza but moreover they have introduced different meals along with pizza and they are offering pizzas in different sizes and packages for their customers which show that they are really trying to satisfy their customers. Cost: Pizza Hut is charging high prizes of their pizzas due to their expensive raw materials, professional staff, monopoly in the market of Pizza at Peshawar, so if they try to have a warehouse here in Peshawar then it will bring changes in their activities like they will not face the problem of raw materials delivery even if any uncertainty happens. M2: Discuss different environmental auditing techniques and how these techniques affecting operation management of given organization. Environmental Auditing Techniques Volume Volume refers to the number of times that an operation has to deliver a service of product. An operation dealing with high volume should be designed to process the demands placed upon it more speedily than the operation meeting lower volume. (2nd Edition, Operations Management in Context by Frank Rowbotham) According to the Manager of Pizza Hut Peshawar, He is the responsible person to check each and everything on daily basis. He is providing raw materials for production department (kitchen) and he is always trying to keep an eye over front desk, hall, waiters, suppliers and distributors (those who do free home delivery). All these works are done by the manager on daily basis and regularly with intend of satisfying customers by delivering their meal orders speedily, in order to provide quick service to them. Variation It describes the patterns of volume demands. If there are many peaks and troughs in demand the situation is said to be one of high variation. The challenge in this case is to design an operation that can provide the correct level of capacity to meet this pattern. Carrying extra capacity in the times of low demand is inherently expensive, involving under-utilization of key resources such as staff, technology and facilities. (2nd Edition, Operations Management in Context by Frank Rowbotham) Changing their work processes and work designs according to change in the taste of customers is a big challenge for Pizza Hut. In the world today customers want changes and want to taste different products and food items. Pizza Hut is specialized in Providing quality pizzas but now in Peshawar new restaurants are opening offering new tastes and dishes which are giving tough time to Pizza Hut and their sales have been affected by it tremendously, keeping in view these environmental affecting factors Pizza Hut has now introduced new items in their meals and are committed to introduce new dishes. They have invested a lot on new technological kitchen equipments in order to compete with competitor and maintain their standards. Variety Variety is the term applied to the number of different types of services or products demanded. High variety environments require different services or products on a frequent basis, whereas low variety demands look for the same output most of the time. An operation facing high variety has to be designed to provide appropriate level of flexibility. This flexibility will be usually expensive compared to the costs of operation designed to cope with low variety. (2nd Edition, Operations Management in Context by Frank Rowbotham) As we have discussed above that people want change in whatever they do or would like to have and as far as pizza Hut is concern it is specialized in pizza coping with high demand is very difficult task for the operation manager of Pizza Hut in Karachi because previously he was providing raw materials for producing Pizzas in each branches of Pizza Hut now with change in demand they will have to introduce new dishes in their menu for that purpose he needs to arrange raw materials, cooks in each branches for these new dishes. Providing quick service to the customer is very important aspect of operation manager so he needs to train his staff to deliver orders on time effectively. Coping with high variety is a more challenging managerial task than dealing with low variety. Customer Contact The customer contact dimension is concerned with how much time the personnel of operation have to spend with their customers. Customers are independent of the operation unlike its staff. The more those customers involved, the greater is challenge to the planning and control of operation manager. (2nd Edition, Operations Management in Context by Frank Rowbotham) The manager who is responsible to control the operations of the Pizza Hut Peshawar branch deals with customers regularly on daily basis. He makes sure that customers are treated fairly in with a fair environment otherwise, customers can be disappointed and they would not want to visit them again which can affect the business. He is always involve with customers and try to deliver their orders quickly. When customers come and while going the manager says welcome and bye from the front desk. In order to satisfy their customers the manager of Pizza Hut spend a lot of time with his supporting staff making sure that every w ork has to be done on time in order to satisfy their customers. D1: Recommend how the studied organization can improve its operation performance on the basis of environmental analysis Pizza Hut has to bring the changes in pizza size, because Pakistani people always prefer and go with a big pizza Pizza Hut has to launch the concept of Eat as much as you can in specific period of time. Obviously, the volume of their customer will be increase, as result they will earn more profit. The Peshawar Pizza Hut has to provide the facilities of parking area for the families. The parking area should provide specious And another problem is in their call centre for order; because their call system is centralized from Karachi. For example if a Peshawar customer call for order ,its call will be connected with Karachi branch and how the Karachi center know about the terrific of Peshawar as result the delivery probably takes much time around 55 minutes and the customer feel unsatisfied. They have to change the centralized call system to local system And there is No information of local delivery system in their website The location of Peshawar Pizza Hut is not best f rom business point of view because it residential area and another point is , as it is far away from Hayatabad and University Town that is their center of attraction as discussed earlier. So the location they are having has both plus and weak points for them as well. The Peshawar Pizza Hut looks very nice from outside (Facade) but they dont take care of cleanliness inside of restaurant which will be having direct impact on customer health. They have to be very careful about cleanliness Overall Pizza Hut should widen their product line by bringing in more items in their menus, e.g. more deserts, which are affordable, and appetizers etc. increasing the serving size especially in the case of salads can become a motivating factor for Pizza Hut. They should delete or omit items which are not in use or not preferred by the consumers such as the thin crust pizza During Ramadan many people face along lines and are unable to utilize the Ramadan deal. For this Pizza Hut should have o ne more outlet in a locality. The Pizza Hut should used the odd number technique i.e. rather than saying a big pizza Rs.900 they should use or say Rs899. This makes the customer think that they are getting a good bargaining In Peshawar the Pizza Hut should open another outlet in the area of Hayatabad, because the people of Hayatabad are very interested with Pizza Huts pizza, but due to their far location, people mostly prefer to go to CHIEF BURGER. Pizza Hut has re-generated its menu and should keep in mind in doing it again and again. They offered new products and should generate and promote their other items such as pastas and spaghettis. Many consumers have complained that Pizza Hut should become a total restaurant that is they should offer different type of desserts at affordable prices. The dessert offered at the moment are either too expensive or are not worth it. A small decrease in the prices of products can attract prospect customers. The reduction can be covere d by the increase in the prices of Drinks, as consumers do not look at the price of sodas when ordering it.

The overall tax is mainly calculated based on GST inclusive and free, which in turn helped in depicting the actual fringe benefit tax of the company. In addition, around $28,374.33 is calculated as the fringe benefit tax that might be paid by the company. Hodgson and Pearce (2015) stated that ATO rule mainly help in reducing the unethical measures used by companies to reduce their tax pay. Calculating the Fringe Benefit Tax for loan Particulars Amount Details Loan to Employee $500,000 A Benchmark Interest Rate 5.95% B Actual Interest Rate 4.45% C Taxable Value Interest on Loan $22,250 D = (AXC) Table 2: Showing calculation of fringe benefit tax for loan (Source: as created by the author) With the help of table 2, the overall calculation of FBT generated from loan can be effectively depicted. In addition, 5.95% is taken as the benchmark interest rate for calculating the fringe benefit, which is around $22,250. Nijland and Dijst (2015) mentioned that depicted rules of ATO mainly help in reducing the loopholes, which mighty help companies to take unethical decisions. Calculating the Fringe Benefit generated from car Particulars Amount Details Total Kms. In addition, the FBT is mainly calculated on the usage conducted by Emma on yearly basis. Soled and Thomas (2016) mentioned that FBT is mainly used in charging tax on the benefits that is being provided by the company to their employees. In addition, Emma only used the car for 336 days and thus the FBT is calculated on usage days. Calculating the Fringe Benefit generated from discount Particulars Amount Details Market Price of the Bathtub 2,600 A Special Price for the Employee 1,300 B Taxable Value of the Bathtub 1,950 C=A x 75% Taxable Value of Benefit 650 C - B Table 4: Showing calculation of fringe benefit tax for discount (Source: as created by the author) Table 4 mainly helps in depicting the FBT from discounts provided to Emma by her employer Periwinkles. In addition, the taxable value is mainly derived by deducting the price paid by Emma from 75% of the actual bathtub. The value is mainly estimated as $650, which is chargeable as FBT to Periwinkles. Vail (2016) mentioned that ATO to reduce the unethical practises mainly provide relevant rules, which help in identifying the adequate FBT of companies. (b) Stating the impact on the Fringe benefit tax of Periwinkles if Emma purchased the shares: The overall FBT of Periwinkles might reduce if the income is generated from shares, which is now being purchased by Emma. This direct income from investment is not chargeable as FBT and provides Periwinkles with a deduction in their tax pay. Furthermore, as per the rules of ATO income generated from shares are solely paid by the holder under capital, gain or income tax. Woellner et al. (2016) argued that some companies use unethical measures to reduce their tax by using the identified loopholes in accounting. In addition, Emma will solely pay tax on income generated from shares and no addition will be conducted on FBT of Periwinkles. Reference: Ato.gov.au. Modern Cinema Bridging the Gap Between Fantasy and Reality Essay Example

Modern Cinema: Bridging the Gap Between Fantasy and Reality Essay Auguste Lumiere, one of the men who helped invent the first projection machine, once ironically said Our invention can be exploited for a certain time as a scientific curiosity, but apart from that, it has no commercial future whatsoever. (Burns) Auguste might have been wrong about his inventions future, but one thing he got right was its exploitation. Since their introduction to the public, movies have widely become one of the worlds most frequent (if not favorite) past times. In fact, they have evolved beyond simply being merely a past time, and are now a multi-million dollar industry, with almost every film featuring either big budget special effects action sequences, A-list actors and actresses, erratic plot twists, or all of the above. Thousands, if not millions of people flock to theatres on opening nights, and with such a widespread audience, questions are raised. Are movies merely fantasy, or do they encourage viewers to recreate what they see in reality? Is this inherent in all forms of entertainment, or is it something the film industry should be held responsible for? It is a fact of life that movies and media do influence people one look at the hundreds of people dressed in costume, waiting on line at the premiere of the first Star Wars prequel a few years ago will tell you that much. The problem, or so critics and over-anxious-parents will have us believe, is that this type of film blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. John Cones, a member of the Film Institute Reform Movement, states that; not only are movies a contributing cause of violent behavior in some children, but movies also influence our societys thinking and behavior about appropriate sexual conduct, graphic language, the use of violence to solve problems in general, our attitudes toward religion and other authoritative institutions and/or individuals in our lives (as a result of Hollywoods consistent anti-religious and anti-authority themes), and how we think about and behave toward each other. Or are they? Many recent tragedies have placed the film industry under close scrutiny by those who believe that excessive violence, recklessness, or just plain stupidity portrayed in movies has had, to put it mildly, a negative effect on the younger generation. Very recently in the news, Matthew Lovett, an 18 year old New Jersey resident, was arrested for allegedly planning to kill a group of teens who had teased and tormented both him and his little brother. Obviously, this is an individual who has underlying problems besides simply teasing, and its both sad and shocking that he was backed so far into a corner that he planned to open fire on both his tormenters, and any random passers-by. But not one news article neglects to make mention of the fact that Lovett was an avid fan of the Matrix movies, wherein the main character, Neo, discovers that the world we all inhabit is merely a farce for a darker, more dangerous world. Obviously, say officials, there must be a connection between the teen and his favorite movie. Associated Press, pars. 7-8) Granted, it has been said that the Matrix movies seem to have more fistfights, gunfire, and explosions than actual plotline, but how fair is it to draw that conclusion? Was the Matrix simply a movie, and Lovett simply an already emotionally unhealthy young man? Or did the movie inspire Lovett to wake up one day and nonchalantly think to himself you know, that Keanu Reeves sure did look cool blowin g all those people up. I think Ill try it, too. A quick search on the World Wide Web for copy-cat incidents, as most overly-concerned citizens like to call them, returns countless pages of results. Two recent movies, The Fast and The Furious, and its sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, have recently become the scapegoats for a number of incidents across the world. Within a two-month time span, Canadian officials placed the blame for two high speed crashes on how the movies glorify high speed street racing. Two officials interviewed in newspaper stories regarding the incidents are quoted as saying; Criminologist Ray Corrado of Simon Fraser University said young people mimic what they think is cool. Those drag scenes in the movies look awesome, he said. Definitely, some young people will mimic what they see. When a movie like this comes out and it glorifies fast driving and [shows] people [getting] away with it, then I believe that yeah, some people would go out and imitate that type of lifestyle or behaviour, Sergeant Ted Holtzheuser said. (Smith, pars 15-16) So obviously, theres no shortage of blame to be pointed and thrown around at various films. But is it accurate to do so? The Fast And Furious movies were a result of an already well-established subculture of racing. Kids had been racing before the movie was a twinkling in the producers eye, and they probably will continue racing long after the VHS copies of the film have disintegrated in the landfills. This is not to say, however, that poor judgement was not one of the main factors in these tragedies. It was, that can be said without a doubt. But a teenager who gets in a car and flies down the road at double the legal speed limit with no professional training to do so, would probably have done it anyway, regardless of seeing the scene acted out in a theatre. On a similar vain, murderers would probably murder anyway, regardless of watching Silence Of The Lambs. Rapists and sexual deviants would probably still be the same way regardless of seeing A Clockwork Orange, and skinheads would still lead their crazy, angry existence even if they had never seen Edward Norton in American History X. In a world where everyone cries wolf and claims to be a victim, how can we know who is really to blame for copy-cat incidents? Should the film industry hold responsibility for influencing people to do stupid things? Rating systems have already been implemented to potentially screen children that may be too young (and therefore, influential) from seeing movies with certain aspects some may find objectable. Should movie makers just cut back on the excitement, for fear it may start some trend? We dont see too many copy-cat incidents of the movie Legally Blonde, perhaps all movies produced should just have a nice, watered-down story-line, weak jokes and a goofy self-empowering story line. Then perhaps the world would be safe once again. I think the answer is easier found if you take a look back a few hundred years. Theres no doubt that William Shakespeares works remained both popular and thrilling to their audience for hundreds of years after their introduction. But with all the popularity they received, how often is it that you hear of a 17th century boy chopping the head off his family members? How common was it for a 16th century man to commit a murder, then store the body parts underneath his floorboards, for the sole reason that he was Shakespeares number one fan? The difference between today and 300 years ago is simple; parenting. Mothers were expected to stay at home and raise the family, and instill in them a proper version of right and wrong. Not to say that women today should quit their jobs and become a full-time mom, but a greater effort absolutely must be made to do a better job of parenting our children. It is only in the last few decades that people have started to imitate film, television, books, etc, to the extent that they have. And the reason is because with the invention of television and movies, parents use them as a substitute mom or dad, plopping the kids in front of the television while they do chores or errands themselves, or dropping the kids off at the movie theatre in order to get some peace and quiet for a few hours. If kids spend more time with movies than mom or dad, of course they are going to be more heavily influenced by them, as well has have a skewed perception of fantasy vs. reality. If parents dont start taking more responsibility for raising their children properly, the kids are going to find someone to do it for them, and when daddy is replaced by Arnold Schwarzenneger as the Terminator, that bridge between fantasy and reality might as well have a ton of TNT planted on it.

Use and analyse the use of a range of Lean tools ( Engineering Business ) - Essay Example Bicheno & Holweg (2008) distinguished between four types of flexibility, namely process flexibility, product flexibility, volume flexibility and labour flexibility. These are detailed in the table below. The organisation can then devise its strategy according to the type of flexibility desired. Some other tools are histograms, Pareto charts, cause and effect diagrams, flow charts and control charts. It is pertinent to point out that strictly; lean is not merely a set of tools. Individual tools are useful for specific purposes, but they are designed to be used together in such a way that increases overall efficiency. The combination and synchronisation of tools allows for a wide range of strategic options. The improvement in competitiveness is made possible by â€Å"an end-to-end value stream† (Bicheno & Holweg, 2008). It is therefore a complete system, which involves processing for enhancing value by reducing waste. Lean tools serve to be applied such that they improve specific and overall efficiency. Mistakes could be made at any time during ordering, but most of these tend to be the result of human errors. It is important to prevent mistakes, for example because it could lead to producing defective parts, giving the wrong service, and ultimately to customer dissatisfaction. Moreover, â€Å"mistakes in one area have consequences in all others† (Nicholas & Steyn, 2008: 485). The alternative could be to make inspections but this itself is not mistake proof, and it is also an inefficient method. Preventing mistakes could eliminate the possibility of failures, and thus producing wastes. This could in turn avoid time wasting and prevent unnecessary costs. Mistakes with an order can be prevented by implementing a safety mechanism at any stage of the ordering process where mistakes would be likely to occur. The Japanese term for making processes protected from mistakes is ‘poka yoke’ (ãÆ' Ã£â€š «Ã£Æ' ¨Ã£â€š ±), which

Human Resource Management - Management Approach to HRM Essay

Human Resource Management - Management Approach to HRM - Essay Example (Baird & Meshoulam, 1988). Historically there is a shift in the concepts and development of the field of human resource management over the period of time. What started as personnel management has now gradually transformed itself into the new realm of human resource management. The ideas of personnel management mainly seems to be contrasting with those of human resource management. The traditional view about the personnel management was of the view that the humans are only responsible for production and profits and personnel management largely envisioned the use of machines as manpower. Historically what is now considered as human resource management was something else. Over the period of time, related concepts and theories were known with different names and gradually transformed into HRM. HRM initially started with the name of Industrial Welfare. (Kaizelong, 2006). This was the first form of human resource management which was basically started with the advent of the labor unions. The initial focus was on the welfare of the factory labors. However it gradually evolved and culminated into the bigger concept of Personnel Management. The real focus on the personnel management started with the advent of industrial revolution where the need for qualified staff was badly felt especially due to the factor of division of labor. There exists a very subtle and minute element of distinction between human resources and personnel management. Both are considered as â€Å"process of getting things done through people†. (ACCEL TEAM, 2007). HRM now is considered as an inte grative approach in which a two-way linkage is assumed between the organizational strategy and individual needs of the employees on the other hand. The essence of HRM now is that the separate personnel actions are now consistently linked and integrated with the overall

Comparison Between Wimax And HSDPA

Comparison Between Wimax And HSDPA ABSTRACT: The future of wireless networks lies in the coexistence of multiple access network technologies. This paper deals with two data oriented access networks, the worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA). HSDPA and Mobile WiMAX are two different high speed mobile technologies with distinctive backgrounds. WiMAX is based on OFDM as HSDPA is based on CDMA. INTRODUCTION: The objective of this paper is to provide a techno-economic comparison of two wireless broadband technologies, Mobile WiMAX and HSDPA. The comparison is divided into two parts. The first part is a general overview and comparison of the two technology standards. The second part describes the different releases of WiMAX and HSDPA and the market opportunities. What is WiMAX? WiMAX is the new term for IEEE 802.16 STANDARD. It is based on the wireless MAN technology. It is a communication technology that works with the radio spectrum to transmit tens of MB/sec in bandwidth between different devices like laptops. The two stimulating forces of present internet are the wireless and the broadband. The WiMAX standard joins the two high speed broadband internet access over a single wireless connection. As WiMAX can be used for long distance purposes it is a very effective way to solve the last mile problem. WiMAX would operate similar to a Wi-Fi but at higher speeds, large distance and for more number of users. WiMAX has the capability to provide service in areas which are difficult for wired infrastructure to reach and has the ability to overcome the limitations of the traditional wired infrastructure. It will provide wireless broadband access to the buildings, either to existing wired networks or in the rural areas. It can also be connected to the WLAN hotspots to the internet. Some of the characteristics of Mobile WiMAX are: Scalability: Mobile WiMAX has been framed in such a way that it is able to work in different channel BWs ranging from 1.25 to 20 MHz. High Data Rates: when Maximum Input Maximum Output (MIMO) 2*2 is used and DL: UL is in the ratio of 1:0 and 0:1 respectively, in a 10 MHz channel high data rates can theoretically support peak download data rates up to 63Mb/s per sector and peak upload data rates up to 28 Mb/s per sector. Mobility: Seamless handoff which is less than 50ms latency and Quality of Service (QoS): QoS measures for WiMAX include availability of service, throughput of data, jitter and the rate of error. WHAT IS HSDPA? High speed Downlink packet access (HSDPA) is a packet based data service feature of the WCDMA standard. In the WCDMA downlink, the data transmission is up to 8-10 Megabits/sec over a bandwidth of 5MHZ. It is sometimes referred to as a 3.5G technology. HSDPA is an advancement of the WCDMA standard which is created to increase the data rate by a factor of 5 or more. HSDPA improves on W-CDMA by using different techniques for modulation and coding. It defines a new WCDMA called high-speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH). That channel performs contrastingly from other channels and helps to fasten the downlink speeds. HS-DSCH is used only for the downlink communication of the mobile. That means that data is sent from the source to the phone. It isnt possible to send data from the phone to a source using HSDPA. The channel is shared between all users which lets the radio signals to be used most effectively for the fastest downloads. Multimedia: From the technical point of view the choice between voice communications in VoIP/WiMAX or WCDMA/HSDPA is a matter of taste. But not in economic terms WCDMA traffic is much costlier than VoIP traffic. For transmitting multimedia data both technologies have practically the same capacities. Both WiMAX and HSDPA have traffic prioritizing and Quality of Service. Security: The security service in a WiMAX is used by an operator to gain benefits from this service as there is always a chance of theft of service in connections, bandwidth and so on. Hence the security service is divided into two parts namely the encryption and the authentication/key derivation. WiMAX supports modern cryptographic algorithms. In HSDPA, Users are authorized by their SIM (or R-UIM) cards. HSDPA does not provide any additional security functions. Typical of all CDMA standards, data encoding for various users works better than any cryptographic algorithm, but doesnt work if an interrupter somehow gets its channels code (like special agents) or is in a base station. Whereas, in WiMAX the base station is strongly protected from management attacks and as the system is organized strongly a certificate based security is easy to deploy and is advisable. Bandwidth: When HSDPA and WiMAX are at same distance from a base station, the gain in HSDPA vs. WiMAX is not clear yet. One of the main reasons for this is WiMAX doesnt have many frequency ranges. But if HSDPA, being an evolutional step in the development of WCDMA, is getting close to the threshold of spectral efficiency, while WiMAX has many likely ways of progression such as new modulation schemes (as well combined with the old ones),MIMO(multiple-input-multiple output)and new frequency ranges (ranging from 10GHz to 66GHz). Modulation: With the use of a robust modulation scheme at long ranges with high spectral efficiency WiMAX gives tremendous throughput and also bears multipath fading. WiMAX base station interchanges throughput for range and this is allowed by the dynamic adaptive modulation. HSDPA supports 16 QAM and QPSK modulation whereas WiMAX supports QPSK, 16 QAM and 64 QAM. This implies that Mobile WiMAX supports higher order modulation than HSDPA. With 64 QAM 6 bits can be carried per symbol and thus higher data rates can be achieved.

Chattanooga Ice Cream Case Essay

The Chattanooga Ice Cream case shows a decline in sales for 5 consecutive years. The Division is headed by Charles Moore. Although Charles Moore was successful in leading teams he seemed to have major issues with this team of vice presidents. According to the Harvard Business Review Chattanooga Ice Cream Case the team was very dysfunctional; they exhibited a lack of trust, high in conflict, disrespectful of each other and exhibited avoidance issues with accountability. Team members seemed to always lay blame to other member. Moore needs to be more assertive in dismissing the ways of the past and the loss of Stay & Shop business needs to be put aside. Moore needs to give clear direction and assign responsibilities to each team member. Moore needs to convey that team cohesiveness is a must and this will go a long way to help ensure no further loss of business. This paper will examine how Moore’s leadership approach contributed to the teams’ dysfunction, discuss what the group of employees themselves could do to better understand the perspectives of each other and their boss as well as make recommendations about Moore should do now to help his team work together and manage conflicts more effectively. Why The Chattanooga Ice Cream Team Is Dysfunctional The Chattanooga Ice Cream team is dysfunctional for several reasons. Some of those reasons include an absence of trust, avoidance, and not being accountable. Also, there is a lack of commitment amongst some managers. Moore is also looking for buy-in from all members for group decisions. There was no clear cut rule as to how decisions were going to be made. Simply put Charles Moore failed to incorporate clear operating rules. Week Fours Lecture – Building High Performance Teams suggests that â€Å"when managers agree on ground rules in advance, the team are much more likely to run efficiently,† this is especially true with the Chattanooga Ice Cream team. The Wisdom of Teams states that â€Å"it is important to agree what will be done when people on the team do not share compatible views. † Agreements should be made about how decisions will be made, how will results be measured and incentive should be given for a team to work together. † The Wisdom of Teams also states’ that if you want a team to gel, you need to offer team-based rewards, not just individual ones,† no of these things took place thus resulting in the dysfunction of the team. The team also failed due to poor management and lack of cohesion. This is a classic symptom of what the Chattanooga Ice Cream Division exhibits. Leading High Performance Teams suggests that during the norming and performing stage, leaders shift focus away from tasks and towards relationships, they take time to develop members and support the efforts of the team members, this is where the leaders lead more than manage and this is the point where the team should coalesce. Although the team never began to coalesce it seemed as though Moore what operating in this level. Team Development The Chattanooga Ice Cream team members should began to perform exercises that would help them better understand the perspective of other team members and their boss. With guidance from Moore team members should began to â€Å"foster commitment. † The team should be aware of the benefits of working together to achieve common goals. Because there is a lack of communication members should start to exercise information sharing but prior to doing this they should focus on rebuilding trust. Researchers suggest that â€Å"Through interaction members are able to share information, generate, ideas and take part in decision making and problem solving. Team communication has been described as the backbone of a team’s existence and is the crux of the task and social dimensions, of all groups (Fisher, 1970; Tyson 1989). Tyson further states, â€Å"For a group to come to existence, organize itself, and develop into an effective team requires above all else good communication between members† (p. 77). Dickinson and McIntyre (1997) state that communication is the binding force foe all elements of teamwork actions, including team adjustment, leadership, advisement, response, support and planning. In fact, communication is considered among the most important forecasters of team performance. (Indian Streams Research Journal, Volume 3, Issue 3, April 2013)† This should be done individually with members what exhibit trust issues and then as a group. Team members should also make an inward and outward commitment to trust and when team members do openly trust, Moore should openly recognize them. Some behaviors that that indicate team members are rebuilding trust openness to others ideas, critiquing idea not the person, offer assistance, self-disclosure or admittance of ones faults, asking for feedback, etc. Some indications that team members have ot embraced commitment to rebuild trust are indifference, failing to keep confidence, withholding information important to decision making, lying, and withholding credit when it is due. Most importantly team members should make a commitment to be accountable. Most importantly because there have been a lot of name calling and probably even lies per the Human Resource Guide one of the most difficult ways to rebuild trust would be to admit that you lied, â€Å"If trust at work is damaged because you lied, you will need to admit you lied and apologize with honest, sincere, and unmistakable humility. No other solution will work to rebuild trust at work. Recommendations About How Moore Can Effectively Manage Conflict â€Å"Conflict is inevitable for leaders, and it exists at the root of some of their best ideas and at the core of many of their worst failures. † (Shearhouse, Susan) Moore should revamp his leadership style in a manner that would demand his team to coalesce as team members. Moore should first take a look at what his leadership/management style is and then see how best to manage this group of team members. Moore should be open about his failures and began to insist that team members follow suit. Moore should assign clear roles and responsibilities to each team member and hold them accountable when they fail to meet his expectations. According to Everything Disc Management Style, Moore should shy away from exhibiting steadiness style of management. This style leans towards being accommodating. Being accommodating leads towards being unassertive according to the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument. Initially, Moore should adapt to the Dominance style of management resulting in him being direct/candid and firm. Moore should help his team set results-oriented goals. In â€Å"What Great Managers Do† by Buckingham, Moore should get to know each of his vice presidents and â€Å"discover what is universal and capitalize on it. † If Moore would lead this team by the following guidelines I believe he will be more successful at leading the team; Don’t â€Å"fear conflict; embrace it – it’s your job. † While you can try and avoid conflict (bad idea), you cannot escape conflict. The fact of the matter is conflict in the workplace is unavoidable. It will find you whether you look for it (good idea – more later) or not. The ability to recognize conflict, understand the nature of conflict, and to be able to bring swift and just resolution to conflict will serve you well as a leader – the inability to do so may well be your downfall. † (Forbes. com) Conclusion In order for the Chattanooga Ice Cream Division to be on the path to reclaiming its place Charles Moore is going to need to revamp his style of leadership and be assertive yet cooperative. Team members need to rebuild trust and be accountable to the mission and values of the organization. Team members must be forthcoming and offer assistance with appraising the ideas of other team members. Most importantly the channel of communication is going to need to be reopened. In terms of team management Moore needs to assert a Dominant Style of Management, take a step back and reform the team with clear directive and expectations, setup a team charter and hold team members accountable for faltering from his expectations. Once the team begins to perform as a team should, Moore should then move on and began to lead and incorporate different management styles. According to Managing When Spark’s Fly, â€Å"to manage conflict, you must work through it. Avoidance is generally not an option. † According to Rick Johnson, â€Å"A leader has to win the hearts and minds of his management team to create a common purpose. This doesn’t happen by accident. It depends on the values and beliefs that create the foundation for how the team works together. It is imperative the leader understands these values and beliefs. They may be unspoken and linger at the subconscious level, but they do affect individual attitudes. That is where the leaders communication skills become critical. †

Facebook: Friend or Foe? Essay

On September 7, 2012, Amanda Todd posted a 9-minute YouTube video entitled â€Å"My Story: Struggling, Bullying, Suicide and Self Harm,† which showed her using flash cards to reveal her experiences of being bullied. During the video, Amanda writes that when she was in seventh grade, she once used video chat to meet new people over the Internet and soon began receiving compliments on her looks. A stranger convinced Amanda to flash her breasts on camera. The stranger later blackmailed her with threats to expose the topless photo to her friends unless she gave a â€Å"show†. She refused. She would never make that mistake again. Amanda Todd wrote that during the next Christmas break, police informed her at four am that the photo was circulating the Internet. Amanda wrote that she experienced anxiety, depression, and panic disorder because of this. Her family moved to a new home, where she later stated that she began using drugs and alcohol. A year later, the stranger had reappeared, creating a Facebook profile which used the topless photograph as the profile image, and contacting classmates at her new school. Once again she was being bullied, eventually causing her to change schools for the second time. With more bullying and an actual attack, she attempted suicide by drinking bleach, but was rushed to hospital to have her stomach pumped. After returning home, Amanda discovered abusive messages about her failed suicide attempt posted to Facebook. Once again, her family moved to another city to start fresh, but Todd was unable to escape Facebook and her first unfortunate error. Six months later further messages and abuse were still being posted to social networking sites. She started to get worse, and began cutting herself. Despite taking anti-depressants and receiving counseling, she overdosed and spent two days in the hospital. She was teased by other students at her school for her low grades, and the time she spent in the hospital to treat her severe depression. On October 10, 2012 at about six PM, Amanda Todd hung herself at home. So is Facebook a friend or a foe? Teens often don’t realize that bullying over the computer is the same as bullying in person. The harmless â€Å"joke† can be taken much, much worse because of the huge audience and the unclear tone of Facebook posts. Although Facebook can be a good source for meeting friends, spreading information, and changing peoples opinions, it can also be very harmful. Facebook can encourage cyber-bullying, make people become anti-social, and distract people from finishing other tasks. On the positive side, Facebook is another way for people to connect with new friends, old friends, and family. According to the pro and cons website on social networking, seventy percent of adult social networking users visit the site to connect with friends and family. Fifty-two percent of teens say that using social media has helped improve their relationships with friends and eighty-eight percent believe that social media have helped them stay connected with friends they can not see regularly. Despite the fact that Facebook and social media sites have many positive sides, it has its bad sides as well. Facebook users are starting to get more and more addicted each day. According to an article from WebMD, in a 2009 survey of 1,030 parents, Rosen and colleagues found out that children and teens had spent more time engaged in media (online and offline) had more anxiety, more stomachaches, and more sick days from school. In teens, the time spent playing video games also led to poorer health. In another ongoing survey of teens and adults, Rosen found that spending more time than average on Facebook was associated with signs of narcissism, anxiety, and bipolar disorder on a standard psychological test. In another 2011 study, 279 middle school, high school, and university students lost focus for an average of three minutes for every fifteen minutes spent studying or doing another task. Checking Facebook just once during the fifteen minute period was associated with lower grades. Not only does Facebook cause lower grades, it also can ruin someones self-esteem. Facebook users feel as if they need to know if something important is happening, and by doing their work, they feel like they might miss out on something big. The New York Times released an article in April of 2011 that talked about FOMO, which stands for â€Å"the fear of missing out.† This mostly occurs when seeing Facebook statuses and photos posted by friends, questioning the event, wondering â€Å"Why wasn’t I there?† or â€Å"How come I didn’t know this was happening?† Sometimes it’s not just a specific event that throws us off, but just scrolling through a friends profile and noticing how much â€Å"better† his or her life appears. Facebook adds negative social comparisons and FOMO, which puts a sense of regret and a heavy weight on self-esteem. As social networking sites become more and more popular, its users have expanded from teens to young adults, to even people over fifty. As you can see with Amanda Todd’s story, many people use social networking sites for the wrong reasons. People can be whoever they want to be, but some do use it for the right reasons, as for example connecting with family they haven’t seen in a while, or catching up with long-distance friends. Is Facebook a place where people can connect and have conversations about things that truly matter to them? Is it a place where you can express yourself without fear of judgement? Or is it a place for status updates that aren’t true, photoshopped profile pictures, and cyber-bullying disguised as humor? So what do you think? Is Facebook a friend or a foe?
